Blackjack Terms - Various popular terms associated with blackjack

Blackjack – The name of the game. Blackjack occurs when the two original cards dealt equal 21.  Must contain an Ace and a card with a value of ten.

Bust – Occurs when your hand reaches a total higher than 21.

Burn Card – A card that is taken, by the dealer, from the top of the deck and discarded.

Cold Streak – Opposite of Hot Streak.  Occurs when a player or dealer is losing a lot of hands in a row.

Card Counter – Someone who can keep track of the cards that have been dealt and use this information to help with decisions in their game.

Cut Card – Usually a plastic, colored card that one player puts into the middle of the deck somewhere when shuffling occurs to ensure fairness.

Comps – When the casino rewards the player with free gifts or takes on the players expenses.  Comps can be in the form of free cash, free hotel rooms, free meals or shows and more.  

Double Exposure – A term used to describe a scenario when both of the dealers cards are dealt face up.

Double Down – The act of doubling your bet after you have seen your first two cards.  If you choose to double down you will receive one, and only one, new card to create your final hand.

Hit – The word or action used when you would like to receive another card.
Hot Streak – Opposite of Cold Streak.  Occurs when the player, or the dealer, are winning a number of hands in a row.

Hole Card – The card of the dealers that is dealt face down.  This card is not visible to the players until all bets have been placed.

Insurance – If the dealers face up card is an Ace, the player may buy insurance as a side bet.  Here the player is hoping that the dealer is holding a Blackjack.

Marker – A term given to a line of credit that the casino has given to a player so they can continue playing (these IOU’s aren’t typically available to everyone, only creditworthy and trustworthy players can take advantage of this perk).

Odds – Commonly used in Blackjack, and most other casino games, odds are the  mathematical probability that a certain outcome will occur. 

Push – When the player and the dealer’s hands are equal to each other.  A tie.

Pit – The vicinity in which the gaming tables in the casino are found.

Pit Boss – A casino employee who supervises all the activities going on in the pit.

Stand - The act of sticking with your hand as it is.  You are satisfied and do not want any more hits.

Shoe – A device that holds a number of decks of cards from which the dealer deals from.

Stiff Hand – A term given to blackjack hands that total from 12 to 16.

Split – If you are dealt two cards of the same rank, you may ‘split’ the cards into two different hands.  In order to split your hand you must match your original bet.  

Soft Hand – A hand in Blackjack that consists of at least one Ace.  For example a hand consisting of an Ace and an 8 would be called a ‘soft 19’

Surrender – In some Blackjack games, a rule that allows the player to throw in their cards, or ‘surrender’ their cards, after the first two cards are dealt.  In this instance the player will only lose half their bet.

Twenty One (21) – When your hand, consisting of at least three cards, totals 21.  Not considered a Blackjack (where your first two cards equal 21).

Up Card – In Blackjack, the term given to the card in front of the dealer that is dealt face up.
